Let’s dive into the specifics of the Mass Save rebates and simplify them for a clearer understanding!

Exploring the 2024 Mass Save Program Rebates

Let’s zero in on the rebates offered for heat pump systems in Massachusetts, guiding you on how to maximize these savings for your specific needs.

As of now, the rebates for heat pump systems fall into two main groups: Whole-Home Rebates and Partial-Home/Supplemental Rebates.

Mass Save Whole-Home Rebate

For homeowners eager to upgrade to a significantly more efficient heat pump system and fully transition away from fossil fuels, the Whole-Home Rebate is an ideal choice.

Currently, Mass Save offers a generous $10,000 rebate for residential single-family or multifamily (up to 4 units) customers looking to replace their existing natural gas, oil, propane, or electric resistance heating systems with a whole-home heat pump system. For those qualifying as moderate income customers, an enhanced rebate of $16,000 is available.

2024 Eligibility Criteria:

Equipment Requirements: All heat pump systems must be ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate certified and listed on Mass Save’s Qualified Product List (QPL). Urban Heating and Air Conditioning will assist in identifying which proposed systems meet these standards.
Installation Specifications: The new equipment must be installed to replace oil, propane, natural gas, or electric baseboard heating systems as the primary source of heating. From January 1, 2024, it is mandatory to remove or disconnect the existing heating system. If the existing system is not being removed, Urban Heating and Air Conditioning will ensure the pre-existing thermostats are disconnected from both the system board and walls, with the capability to reconnect in emergencies.

Weatherization Pre-requisites: Homes must be adequately weatherized before installing a heat pump. This can be achieved in one of three ways:
A) Homes constructed in or after 2000 automatically meet this requirement.
B) Undergo a no-cost Mass Save Home Energy Assessment. If it’s recommended that over $1,000 worth of weatherization or insulation is needed, you must proceed with those recommendations. Urban Heating and Air Conditioning can conduct your Mass Save Home Energy Assessment and carry out any suggested weatherization or insulation improvements.
C) If you have previously had a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment post-2013 and followed through with the recommended weatherization or insulation, this condition is met. Documentation may be requested to support this.

Mass Save Partial-Home/Supplemental Rebates

If you’re not in the market to overhaul your entire heating and cooling system and are considering a dual fuel or hybrid heat pump solution—or simply aiming to enhance your current system in certain areas of your home—rest assured, we’ve got you covered!

For Massachusetts homeowners, whether in single-family or multifamily dwellings, who wish to supplement their existing heating system, our Partial-Home/Supplemental rebates are tailor-made for you. With Mass Save’s current offer of $1,250 per ton, capping at a generous $10,000 rebate, targeting specific zones in your home for heating or cooling has never been more attainable.

Eligibility Criteria for 2024:

System Requirements: All equipment must be ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate certified and included on Mass Save’s Qualified Product List (QPL). Urban Heating and Air Conditioning will assist in identifying compliant systems.
Control Integration: For areas where propane, oil, or natural gas will continue to be used, an integrated control listed on the Mass Save Integrated Control Qualified Product List is necessary. This requirement is waived if you’re completely replacing the existing system in a specific zone.

Weatherization and Assessment: While it’s not mandatory to undergo a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment or to follow through with recommended weatherization or insulation for efficient system performance, it is highly recommended to ensure your heat pump operates at peak efficiency.

And, if you’re exploring the possibility of 0% financing over 7 years through the Mass Save HEAT Loan, starting with a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment is your first step.
